Every week I evaluate at least one new tool. Most don't pass the filter. This 5-page guide distills the exact criteria I use to decide which technology enters my stack and which I discard — without guilt and without FOMO.

The 5 principles:

  • Sovereignty: If you can't export your data in 30 seconds, it's not yours. Every SaaS dependency is a point of failure you don't control.
  • Efficiency: The best tool is the one you already master. Adding complexity has a cognitive cost that nobody bills.
  • Sustainability: A stack that requires heroic maintenance every month is not sustainable. I prefer 5 tools that work for 10 years over 20 that work for 6 months.
  • Adaptability: The right technology is the one that adapts to your context, not the other way around. An ESP32 on a rural farm solves more than a cloud dashboard.
  • Openness: If the code is closed and the format is proprietary, you're building on sand. Open standards are the only guarantee of continuity.

Each principle includes a checklist of 5 questions to evaluate any tool in less than 10 minutes.

  • 5-page PDF with the 5 principles developed (one per page)
  • Quick evaluation checklist: 25 questions (5 per principle) to audit any tool
  • Printable decision matrix: cross-reference the 5 principles with your current stack
  • 3 documented real cases: how I applied the filter to a multi-LLM router, to an n8n automation system, and to a digital twin with Home Assistant
  • Links to the nodes in the digital garden where I document each decision in depth
  1. Download the PDF and read it completely (15 minutes)
  2. Print the decision matrix or open it in your notes tool
  3. Choose a tool from your current stack and evaluate it with the 25 checklist questions
  4. Mark in red the principles it does not meet — if there are 3 or more, it's a candidate for replacement
  5. Repeat with each active tool in your workflow (one per week is enough)
  6. For each identified replacement, consult the real cases as a reference for how to execute the migration without breaking your flow
